We are thrilled to announce that Board Treasurer Benjamin Schoenbrun and his wife Inga Schoenbrun have made a matching grant of $500,000 to our new secondary school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Program. Ben and Inga will match donations to the STEM Program and construction of the science block dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000. Please explore other ways to donate here.

We are all aware of the importance of STEM education to prepare students for success in the 21st Century working world. This fact is even more critical in a developing country trying to build a vibrant, sustainable economy. That is why the new Hawthorne-Scribner High School (HSHS) offers a high quality science program.

Five laboratories for Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture Science and Information Technology occupy the first two floors of the science building in the center of the campus. HSHS highlights agricultural science and information technology in its academic offerings as a reflection of its location in Uganda’s breadbasket and a recognition that proficiency in information technology is essential to academic and vocational success in all disciplines.

Construction began on the STEM building in September 2024 and HSHS opened for its first classes on Feb 15, 2025. By the time that the school opened, the STEM building structure was almost complete. In September 2024, this was a bumpy, weedy field. This is a rather large building built without power tools.

STEM building construction progress as of early February 2025.

The students and teachers began to use the building in July 4, 2025, when Ben worked with the students to move the library book by book from the Classroom Building to its final location in the Science Building. HSHS expects to complete final finishes on the building by the end of October 2025. REACH for Uganda also wishes to thank the Schoenbrun family and the Friends of Arlington Library for the donation of 200 history, science, and literature books.

Although the STEM building is mostly complete, matching funds remain, and HSHS still needs funding for modern science equipment and supplies and manipulatives.
