As the first year of our water project concludes, REACH for Uganda is excited to announce we’ve raised over $310,000 so far, including advanced funds and pledges, with an additional $140,000 in matching commitments. We need your help to reach our $500,000 goal to provide clean water infrastructure for Arlington Academy of Hope (AAH) schools, clinics, and 39 outreach schools in Bududa, Namisindwa, and Manafwa districts.
Clean water is scarce in Eastern Uganda, and communities often rely on polluted river water, causing widespread gastrointestinal diseases. REACH for Uganda is working to provide clean, safe water through a combination of gravity-fed systems, rainwater harvesting, and filtration. By the end of 2024, we aim to complete water systems at AAH schools and clinics, reducing reliance on firewood and benefiting surrounding communities.
We have come a long way since we started our water campaign in March 2024, having raised over $330,000 and provided access to clean drinking water to five schools and two clinics. This year we would like to more than double that amount, so we can further improve access to clean water and sanitation in Bududa and Namisindwa.
In 2024, we:
- Provided potable water filters from the Ugandan Water Project for four schools and two clinics, training students and staff to clean the water and maintain the filters.
- Built a comprehensive hybrid (gravity water and harvested rainwater) water supply system for the Hawthorne-Scribner High School (HSHS) in Bududa with an over 100,000 liter capacity, making HSHS the first secondary school in the region that has clean water from the tap.
- Improved rainwater harvesting capacity at our primary schools, the Arlington Junior School (AJS) and the Matuwa Junior School (MJS), and the Beatrice Tierney Clinic in Matuwa.
- Replaced the deteriorating iron-sheet roof and gutters to permit safe rainwater harvesting at AJS.
- Built water connections using gravity and the inverted siphon method (like a Roman aqueduct) to provide water to HSHS and AJS.
This year, we would like to raise $700,000, to meet the following priorities in the next two years:
- Additional piped drinking water distribution at HSHS.
- Namisindwa district, Bupoto subcounty water supply system, supplying filtered gravity water from the Laaso River to Natsekhe and the Matuwa Town Council (including MJS, the Beatrice Tierney Clinic Matuwa, and the Matuwa Primary School). It will provide the first modern pipes water system in the subcounty and ultimately provide an extensible supply of clean water for almost 10,000 people in 29 villages.
- AJS gravity water storage and treatment with rainwater harvesting as a backup source, and potable water sources for AJS, staff housing, and the adjacent Beatrice Tierney Clinic Bumwalukani.
- Access to potable water and repairs to rainwater harvesting systems for our outreach schools, starting with those with critical needs.
- Wastewater treatment for the Kikholo community in Bududa, including HSHS.
- We will readjust this campaign as further community needs arise.
